Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), Ranchi recorded an all time high in the field of exploration by drilling 13.66 lakh meters, surpassing the MoU target of 12.50 lakh meters for 2017-18. It registered a growth of about 21 per cent over the previous year, informed Shekhar Saran, CMD, CMPDI while highlighting the major achievements during 2017-18 here on Saturday.

In the last financial year, the government undertaking issued dividends and bonus shares for the first time since its incorporation. It has pumped in more than Rs 70 crore in R&D and S&T projects and achieved the target of Rs 40 crore in capital expenditure. The use of drones was initiated on six mines for various technical applications like generation of contours and computation of stock pile volumes. CMPDI and its agencies have established about five billion tonnes of additional coal resources to the ‘measured (proved) category.’ Additionally, it has also undertaken initiatives to extract Coal Bed Methane (CBM- becomes explosive in the range of 5-15%) from its mining leasehold area.

Thanking the entire family of the CMPDI, the CMD said, “CMPDI has recorded an excellent all round performance during 2017-18. The dedication and hard-work put in have led us set this benchmark. Crossing this benchmark in the current financial year will be challenge for us but we want to carry the good work.”

The CMD applauded the work done in the field of CSR. He said that CMPDI has been constantly doing good work in sectors like healthcare, education, rural development and skill development among others.

“We are sponsoring the annual fees of 12 visually challenged girls of Brajkishore Netraheen Balika Vidyalaya. Additionally, we have constructed a computer cum training centre for the skill development of the girls in 2017-18. Scholarships have been provided to 80 BPl girls from two schools under the banner of ‘Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao’”, added Saran.

On the environmental aspect, CMPDI has been carrying out initiatives to restore open cast mines based on satellite data. In the last financial year, thermal remote sensing has been used to monitor coal mine fire in Jharia, Raniganj, Karanpura and Bokaro. Shekhar Suman, CMD, said, “An R&D project has been taken up in collaboration with NRSC/ISRO for satellite based regional air quality monitoring in coalfield areas.

Keeping in mind the environmental concerns of the country and to fulfill the requirements of MoEF&CC, we have added 43 opencast projects for monitoring. Hence, from this year 206 mines and 19 coalfields are being monitored using satellite data in a phased manner.” CMPDI became the largest accredited organisation for environment services by QCI NABET.
