Brahmananda Narayana Multi-speciality Hospital in partnership with ‘Smile Train Organisation’ in USA has successfully performed over 200 surgical procedures on children born with cleft lip and cleft palate.
This birth defect is found in one out of every 600-800 children born in India. However, not many hospitals in rural India are equipped to perform such procedures. Thus, Brahmananda Narayana Multi-speciality Hospital in Jamshedpur undertook this humanitarian project to put a smile on the faces of many children born with cleft lip/ palate in rural areas of Jharkhand and neighboring States.
These surgeries were performed by leading plastic surgeon Dr. R. Bharat, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, along with his team of anesthetists and paramedics. In India, it is estimated that around 35,000 children with cleft deformities are born every year.
Other than affecting the person’s speech, eating, dental, ear infection problems and other social skills, this deformity can be embarrassing and can also become an economic burden on the family.
