City-based Animal Welfare Officer (AWO) , Somnath Hembrum, has joined Humane Society International’s (HIS) Animal Rescue Team in Kathmandu, Nepal,  to offer emergency animal welfare aid following the recent devastating earthquake there.

The team arrived in Kathmandu on April 30 with emergency veterinary medicines, vaccinations, surgical equipment and other supplies, so that HSI's team of specialist veterinarians and disaster relief experts can assist local animal welfare groups on the ground in the strike zone.

Somnath Hembrum, AWO from Jamshedpur said: “We are glad to be a part of this rescue team in Nepal. Many animals are affected on the ground. It’s an opportunity for us to rescue animals in distress and provide much needed care for ill and injured animals.”

Rahul Sehgal, director of HSI Asia, said: “The situation in Nepal is catastrophic for people and animals alike. The human tragedy has been well documented, but less known is the plight of animals. With the support of the local animal welfare organizations, our team is identifying all options for providing urgent assistance including the treatment of injuries sustained in the earthquake and emergency supplies of food and water.”

“We have prepared emergency veterinary medicines, vaccinations, surgical equipment and other supplies, so that HSI's team of specialist vets and disaster relief experts can assist local animal welfare groups on the ground in the strike zone,” said an official.
