The district police are witnessing the testing time with the beginning of the New Year. While the deteriorating law and order situation in the city remains a major concern, the city has witnessed more than 200 suicides in which about 40 per cent were teenagers.
The beginning of the year has been marred by twin murder at Sankosai in Mango Olidih on January 1. Police have launched an intensive arms checking drive to tackle crime but they seem to have overlooked the movement of various gangs which are roaming free. The killing of two persons in Sankosai took place when police were busy frisking commuters in Mango.
Concerned over the situation, a delegation of BJP-led by district BJP president Rajkumar Srivastava met the SSP Amol V Homkar expressed concern over the situation. The delegation handed over a memorandum and sought security for the common people. “The city had been free from crime, but now the ‘knife culture’ has taken roots. The murders at Mango are a glaring example. The police should act with utmost vigil and nab the accused. Thefts were common but recent rise in murder cases is serious matter of concern,” said the BJP leader.
“We have submitted memorandum to various police stations. If situation remains the same we would be forced to meet the CM for prompt action,” conceded Kalyani Sharan, a BJP activist. When contacted, SSP Amol V Homkar said police was taking necessary steps to control and detect crime. “We are giving our best and will come up with results very soon,” he claimed.
Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Suresh Sonthalia said police should not only focus on arms checking drive but also strengthen their information network. “Police give enough leeway to criminals who escape after committing crime. This can be stopped after proper sealing of entry and exit points of the city,” he added.
Kolhan deputy inspector general of police Arun Kumar Singh said, “We have detected some of the sensitive cases which took place in Jamshedpur recently. Investigation into these cases is on and results will come out soon.”
