City colleges lack girls' hostel

Prominent city colleges — St Xavier’s, Gossner, Ranchi Women’s College, Marwari College, Ranchi and Doranda Colleges — may well be imparting education to girls but still lack hostel accommodation for them.

Since decades, these colleges have been carrying out their academic sessions without any provision for girl’s hostel. Due to this girls are bound to reside at the private lodges as paying guests.

Marwari College and Ranchi Women’s College has limited hostel seats, St Xavier’s and Gossner College have countable hostel facilities only for tribal girls whereas Doranda and Ranchi College have no hostels.

“By the end of this year, we are planning to submit a proposal to the Human Resources Development department concerning girl’s hostel so that we can get a concrete layout by next year. There is a council system in our college wherein female students are suggested lodges and hostels where they can stay at a considerable amount. Some girls of our college are managed in the Post Graduate girl’s hostel of Ranchi University at Bariatu,” said Ranchi College Principal Dr B Mukherjee.

Doranda College Principal echoed, “Our College is located at a prime location and has well connected transportation facilities. Having a hostel exclusively for girls is not possible for us.” Marwari College has a girl’s hostel accommodating only 100 students. “In future we might extend our hostel,” said Marwari College Principal UC Mehta.

Expressing Gossner College’s limitation to provide girls hostel facility Principal SK Ecka said, “Jharkhand Adivasi Welfare society has built a girls hostel bearing 140 students. For the general students we are unable to provide any accommodation since there is death of resources on behalf of the government. Students living without their parents are advised to arrange their own accommodation.”

“We have limited hostel provision for the tribal girls at Ursuline Convent’s hostel but for the general candidates they ought to make their own arrangements,” informed a Professor of St Xavier’s College.
