Sixteen-year-old Mohammed Haider sustained 65 per cent burns and is struggling for his life at the MGM Medical College and Hospital after he set himself on fire at his house in Jugsalai on Monday. The teenager is said to have had been upset over the girl he married having not disclosed that she was a divorcee and five years older than he.
“I am hurt. My wife has cheated on me. A year ago, I was married to Gulshan. It was after the marriage that I could know that she was almost five years older than me. Moreover, I discovered that she also a divorcee. Despite such cheating I continued to stay with her at home, but I lost my sense when I found her visiting her cousin brother’s house repeatedly,” narrated Haider.
The teenager said when he lodged a complaint against the relative who had arranged the marriage, the police ignored his words. Haider is a resident of Purani Bustee Road in Jugsalai and earns his living by selling plastic products in the city. He poured kerosene oil on his body and set himself on fire.
Officer in-charge of Jugsalai police station, Ashok Giri confirmed about the bid by a teenager who set himself on fire on Monday morning. “We have taken the statement of the victim and have started investigation into the matter. We will study the situation that led the victim take such a step,” said the officer-in-charge.
