Chandan Jha took over as the new superintendent of police (city) from Tuesday. The new City SP took charge from the superintendent of police (rural) Shailendra Kumar Sinha.  Jha's predecessor Karthik S had handed over the charge as City SP to Sinha before he left for Ranchi where he was posted as SP (Traffic) on February 20. A 2011 batch IPS, Chandan was earlier posted as sub-divisional police officer in Pakur and also served as additional SP in the Special Branch.  A resident of Darbhanga district, the new SP did his schooling in Patna and engineering from NIT, Calicut.

Talking to the newsmen the SP said that crime control and traffic control would be his focus areas. "I want to ensure a peaceful city. We will focus on controlling the crime and will stress on scientific method for the detection of the crime," stated the 29-year-old police officer. Speaking about the vehicular traffic control, Chandan said the number of vehicles in the city is much greater than the volume of the roads' surface area.  “We will also increase the night vigil and patrolling. Special check points would be installed during late hours in various sectors.

Notably, of late there has been a spurt in the crime of loot, snatching, eve-teasing and drunk-driving at the steel city.  The people, especially the women and girls are not safe as the criminals and other miscreants have a free run committing loot and snatching with impunity. Senior SP, Amol V Homkar expressed confidence that the joining of the new SP will help enhance the police set up in the city.
