Camps to beat summer blues

Gone are the days when children would laze around the house or stay glued to the television or mobile phones during summer holidays. With schools getting shut for vacation, summer camps have become the rage where children hone their creative skills. Summer camps in the steel city are offering workshops on music, dance, art and craft, sports including swimming.

Sports Department of Tata Steel is organising summer camp May 13-31, 2019 at JRD Tata sports complex. The objective of the event is to inculcate a healthy lifestyle among the children. Keeping in view the vacation time, the event is positioned to attract maximum participants.

For children in the age group 5–18 years, the camp includes sporting activities in 19 disciplines such as - Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football, Golf, Handball, Karate, Kabaddi, Roller Skate/Roll Ball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.

Yoga and Zumba will be for all age groups. Experienced coaches will impart training and will be assisted by senior players.

The swimming pools at G Town Club, United Club, Beldih Club and JRD Tata sports complex are abuzz with activities these days. In the last fortnight the strength of budding swimmers have increased manifold. Officials of the club informed that they are receiving anxious calls for admission.

“Summer vacations were once meant extended trips to grandparents, meeting cousins and indulging in all forms of sporting activity. But the pressure of academic curriculum has now replaced the earlier joys with extra classes and tuitions, while leisure time is devoted to television.

To help children understand the importance of sports in laying the foundations of a healthy life during their summer vacations, we organise summer camp every year,” said an official of sports department.

Greenfield School also  organised a summer camp from May 11 to 14 at its Mango campus. “At a time when learning has become monotonous norm among schoolchildren, with parents and teachers rarely encouraging them to understand the concept and their applicability in real life, we are organising camp to bring out hidden talent among children,” said Ekta Agarwal, principal, Greenfield School.

Agarwal said that to help children understand the importance of extra activities in laying the foundations of a healthy life during their summer vacations, they organise summer camp.

She said that summer is the best time for children to take time off from the regular chore of going to school and getting down to the curriculum. Summer camps also provide welcome relief to working parents as they keep their child occupied for a part of the day.
