BSl on pure drinking water mission for school children

Published on:

Children studying in Bokaro's peripheral villages will now get pure drinking water. Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the steel behemoth (Bokaro Steel Plant) has set out in a mission to supply low-cost TERAFIl Water Filters to the schools and Anganwadi Kendras in the surrounding villages.

The drive started on the 26th of June from village Tantri which is among the 20 odd villages in the periphery of the steel township wherein this facility is planned to be provided. So far, around 300 such water filters have  been distributed in Bhawanipur, Damudih, Dubka, Giridhar Tand, Gorabali, Jaina, Kandra, Khamarbendi, Machatand, Marafari RS, Obra, Tetulia, Jhopro, Chamsobad, Khutri, Mango, Tupkadih, Asanbani, Anshudih, Basant Pur and other peripheral villages.

Clean drinking water being a major concern and a basic necessity for school children in the peripheral areas of the steel township, BSl’s CSR dept took up the initiative of supplying water filters. Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET), Bhubaneswar, a Govt. of India organization under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, and Institute of Mineral and Material Technology (IMMT), Bhubaneswar, a Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)  laboratory  have jointly developed the domestic low cost TERAFIl Water filter of 30 litres capacity.

The TERAFIl Water Filter is basically a low-cost device for removal of excess iron from water along with turbidity and bacteria without electricity and chemicals.

TERAFIl Filters are made of burnt porous red clay media (disc), used for filtration and treatment of both surface & ground raw water into clean drinking water. The cost of one such water filter is Rs 568/- only. At present, Bokaro Steel plans to install around 500 such water filters in the peripheral villages. The effort taken up by BSl has been widely appreciated by the villagers and the beneficiaries.
