Brain stroke, a lifestyle disorder disease is increasing in Jharkhand. lack of immediate medical facilities and awareness are main reasons for this rise, say state doctors.
Highlighting over this fact, consultant neuro and spine surgeon Dr Sanjay Kumar said, “Brain attack cases are usually overlooked. Moreover, most of such cases are unrecognized because doctors especially in villages fail to diagnose. It is very important to treat the disease within three hours of attack.”
Notably, 80 percent of brain stroke is caused due to clot in the blood vessels. This results to no supply of blood within that particular blood clot portion. The opposite side of this affected area is paralysed. This is known as infarction.
“Almost 90 to 100 percent of infarction is cured if a patient is brought to a neuro-surgeon within three hours. A special injection ranging between Rs 60-70,000 is given. After three hours, it is useless to use this injection as the patient suffers from pneumonia,” said Apollo Hospital’s Dr Vijay Mishra.
For this reason, doctors of Jharkhand chapter Indian Medical Association (IMA) at a press conference on Monday related to World Stroke Day observed on October 29 urged the government to establish rehabilitation and physio therapy centres across the state so that secondary damages of the disease can be tackled.
Symptoms of this disease include high blood pressure, diabetes, genetic brain disorder, cholesterol rise, smoking, heart ailments and growing age.
According to IMA doctors, except for genetic ones, all the other symptoms can be avoided by taking regular medicines. Dr Sanjay said that patients make lame excuses for forgetting their regular medicines. “CT Scan and MRI centres are required for tests. Unfortunately, CT scan facilities are available only in cities and in two or three villages of our state. Government should take initiative for CT scan centres establishment,” he said.
The disease is followed with difficulty in speaking, sudden headache, face curvature, fainting, vomiting or strong body pain in the early hours of the morning when BP remains high. Dr Vijay added, “As a remedy to avoid this disease, people should avoid eating junk food and taking stress. Rather take adequate fruits and green vegetables and sleep for about seven to eight hours.”
