Abhishek Kumar, the son of an auto rickshaw driver has made it to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
17 year old Kumar residing at Chunabhatta of Kokar area has cracked India’s one of the toughest competitive examination and made his parents proud. He has secured 4731 rank at the All the India Entrance Exam of Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (Advance) 2013.
It was difficult for this family to make both the ends meet. “Every month I used to be late in submitting my school fees. Due to this financial crunch, I joined FIITJEE’s Fortunate 40 scheme in 2011 which provides 100 percent scholarship to engineering aspirants whose total parental monthly income is below Rs 10, 000. A family friend advised me to join this reputed coaching centre and with regular tests here in these two years, my competitive spirit got a boost,” said Abhishek who seeks to join IIT’s Electrical or Civil engineering branch.
Abhishek’s younger sister Kajal Kumari studying in class tenth is inspired with his achievement and seeks to clear an engineering entrance. “Once I get to any of the reputed IITs, I would apply for student’s loan and refund the money after my placement so that my sister too can fulfill her aspiration of becoming an engineer,” Abhishek said.
Explaining his school days, he said, “I would often feel inferior when my friends discussed about their well family ambience but had the institution that some day I will be able to provide all such basic amenities to my family wherein they would cherish what I could not but my friends could.”
Observing his efforts towards studies, the owner of the rented home where Abhishek stays along with his parents and sister has charged half amount of rent for past 12 years. “Our landlord charges a rent of only Rs 950 for the three rooms accommodated to us. He believes that education deserves appreciation,” said Abhishek’s father Abhay Deo Singh.
This Below Poverty line (BPl) boy has passed his matriculation from DAV Bariatu with 10 Cumulative Grade Point Average which is considered the best score at All India Secondary School Examination. Adding feather to his score list, he secured 90.4 percent in Class twelfth from Jawahar Vidya Mandir. He appeared only in one engineering entrance to save his father’s expenditure and fortunately cleared it.
