Bokaro police opt for TETRA to curb crime

In a bid to curb crime, Bokaro district police are going to switch over to advanced wireless communication systems like Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) or others soon.

“We are going to install a new communication system called Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) and will replace the present communication in the urban area of Bokaro for maintaining law and order, crime and traffic management,” said YS Ramesh, Superintendent of Police, Bokaro.

“like State capital Ranchi, Bokaro needs such advanced communication system,” he added. The present communication system has several problems like lack of efficient transmission, clarity in transmission, etc.

TETRA will enable police to not only communicate securely, but also select the listener either on one-to-one basis or for select group of users, said Ramesh.

“This system will also enable police to send messages and photos along with their position and time and that cannot be tampered,” he added.

The police personnel on duty cannot cheat by giving wrong information about location as it is connected through GPS. It also has an internal dialing facility, which enables the officer to maintain confidentiality of the information being transmitted.

The police now use the VHF radio communication system. “Presently, we

cannot talk directly to an individual officer and have to depend on control room as we can talk only on the call forwarded through control room,” the SP said.

In Jharkhand, TETRA is now being used by Ranchi police. TETRA, formerly known as Trans-European Trunked Radio, uses the time division multiple access (TIME) system.

The quick response team would be formed soon to maintain law and order in the urban areas of the district. An order has been executed to prepare the profiles of the criminals along with a list of their bailers and associates, the SP said.

“I have directed our officers to conduct special drives against sex rackets, drug paddlers and ragging in the colleges,” said the SP.
