Annoyed with the price of onion touching the mark of Rs 100 per kg across the country, Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha members of Ranchi sought loans from local banks to purchase onions here on Thursday. Their requests however, were turned down by the bank officials saying that the loan could not be granted for personal consumption.
“As the sudden surge in the prices of onions has destabilised our budget, we came here to apply for personal loan for the purchase of onions so that we can continue having onions in our platter,” said BJP Yuva Morcha President Satyanarayan Sinha. Onions have badly affected the budget of our kitchen, said he said.
The BJP workers reached on Thursday morning at the Albert Ekka Chowk Branch of United Bank of India with all the required documents like identity and address proofs to apply for personal loan in the bank.
Their requests were turned down by the bank manager saying the bank could not grant loans for the goods of personal consumption. “We talked to the manager for loan but he turned down our requests saying loans could not be granted for personal consumption of eatables,” said officer in charge of BJP Headquarters in Ranchi Gama Singh. The bank manager on the other hand said that he was ready to give loans for the commercial use of onions, added Singh.
According to the party worker’s both Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are responsible for the sudden spurt in the prices of onions. “Congress has a tendency of promoting black marketing by holding of goods so that it can make money by gradually releasing those items in the market,” said a worker Kanwaljeet Singh ‘Shanti’.
They also alleged that despite the rise in the prices both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar have no idea when it will come down. “Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar have been saying for the last several months that the prices will come down in the next two to three weeks but it has been rising day by day which is not a good sign for us,” added Singh. It seems it is beyond their control,
Singh alleged.
