People preferring to take alcohol at picnic spots of Jharkhand may be in trouble this New Year as the state government has planned to take action against such drunkards. The tourism department has ordered Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and SSPs of all the districts to initiate legal proceedings on person consuming alcohol in these public places where liquor is banned.

“Keeping a close watch is beyond our limitation. So, the district administration officials of all the districts have been asked to take safety measures on their part in order to avoid any accident in the picnic spots,” said a senior officer of the State Tourism Department. Explaining the initiatives of Ranchi police in this regard within the state capital, Ranchi City SP Manoj Ratan Chothe said, “All the local police stations have been instructed to do regular patrolling around their picnic spots so that anti-social activities can be avoided. Also, we have notified that swimmers deployed as life-savers in lakes and waterfall spots will have to submit their phone numbers to the concerning authorities so that we can verify their identification easily in case of an accident like that of ‘Ranchi lake’ tragedy on December 15 wherein four persons lost their lives due to capsizing of the motor boat.”

Ranchi SSP Bheemsen Tuti has also assured to beef up the security on January 1 since it is the only day of the year registering large number of tourists at waterfalls like Dasam, Jonha, Hirni, Hundru and Sita falls. Few of the residents who are habituated of celebrating the first day of year with liquor in picnics are also planning to avoid this habit. “Cases of crime are rising at public places these days. Drinking alcohol may lead to any such misdeed. It is better to drink at home this year,” said a youngster of Hinoo.
