Bear mauls tribal shepherd to death in PTR

Bear mauled a primitive tribal Dipak Birjeeya under Bareysarn range of the tiger reserve Palamu who finally succumbed to the injuries said sources.  This is the first case of fatality at the hands of bear this year.  About three weeks back a tribal was attacked by a bear with a cub when the tribal came across the bear.  This victim is however getting well in RIMS Ranchi.

DFO buffer Mahalinga has confirmed the casualty of Birjiya by the bear on Friday August 19. Mahaling said the primitive tribal was in the jungle with his live stock for grazing. The tragedy occurred on his return home at Kocha Pahar in Bareysarn range of the PTR.

DFO buffer said the victim’s family would be given ex gratia relief to the tune of rupees 2.50 lakh.  Post mortem was conducted of this Birjiya for the release of the ex gratia relief.

On being asked if the mauled primitive tribal was given any medical aid Mahaling said he was taken down to Garu referral hospital where he finally breathed his last.

Bear’s mauling spurs huge bleeding as it uses its claws most fiercely and attacks the soft parts of the body even the hard one the scalp where its claws come out with the entire scalp and hair too.

PTR’s Garu Bareysarn Mahuadarn  axis is prone to bear attacks said another DFO Core A K Mishra.  Bear with cub is most dangerous and it is always wise and safe not to confront any bear as it gives hot chase and even climbs the tree to hurt its victim if the victim so climbs up for his safety of life.

Sources said there is one wolf sanctuary in Mahuadarn but one rarely hears about any attack by pack of wolves. It is the bear that remains in news for its confrontation with man.  Man bear conflict is most evident in the buffer zone of the PTR.

Sources said villagers also do not spare bear when found alone and helpless as two years back a bear in a water body was stoned to death.
