In a shocking incident, three students of Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) were expelled on Sunday allegedly for being involved in ragging. The incident reportedly took place on Saturday night in the campus.

The university administration acting on a complaint lodged by a student of BSc (Forestry) Gautam Kumar and after preliminary investigation acted against his three seniors of MSc (Forestry). An FIR against the senior students for their inhumane behaviour and also for instigating Gautam Kumar to commit suicide has been lodged at Kanke PS on Sunday.

“All the three students identified were drunk and was using abusive language for the junior students. According to the available inputs, Kumar has identified only three seniors. Taking stringent action against the accused, all the three students, Firoz Ahmed, Pratap Singh and Prashant Kumar have been immediately expelled from the university,” said Dean Student Welfare (DSW), BAU, NK Rai.

According to the officials of the university, five senior students took Gautam Kumar and seven other of his classmates to the top floor of the hostel on Saturday night. They reportedly stripped him and asked him to remain mum, if anyone enquires about the issue. Furthermore, they even shaved Kumar’s head when he tried to resist.

Reports suggest that Kumar had earlier warned the seniors to expose them in front of management, if they do not stop harassing the juniors. As per the inputs, the group of five senior students were niggling the juniors since long. However, none of the junior students had come forward and spoken up about the incident. Kumar is yet to identify two other seniors involved in this heinous crime.

“The matter at present is under the jurisdiction of Kanke Thana. Kumar is the only student who came forward and narrated the entire incident. Police present on the spot have enquired about the incident from the other hostel students as well. Kumar is a resident of Ratu Road of Ranchi and a fresher admitted this year. At present, Kumar is with his family,” added Rai.

After enquiring about the incident from Kumar, police have filed FIR against five people. “It is a clear case of ragging and physical torture. The complainant has registered a case against five persons. Soon the probe will begin keeping all aspects into mind. University officials too will be enquired about the incident,” said Kanke Thana in-charge, Meera Singh. No arresting in the case had taken place till the report was filled.

Notably, in 2010, a student of BAU had to rush to the local hospital as the seniors at hostel allegedly harassed her. Although the then Dean of BAU, has denied ragging charge on campus premises. However, after the enquiring, two students were found guilty and were suspended after the probe report was out.
