The job of heating of Battery No.- 4 of Bokaro Steel Plant’s (BSl) Coke Ovens commenced on October 29. BSl CEO Anutosh Maitra lit up an oven to inaugurate the battery heating.

With this, Battery- 4 has now entered the crucial pre-production heating phase, which will last for about three months. “Battery heating is a complex process wherein thermal soaking of the battery walls is done in a gradual manner. By the end of the heating regime, the battery walls attain a temperature in the range of 1180-1200 degree centigrade” a BSl official said.

Coke Ovens supply Coke, which is a crucial input for iron making in the Blast Furnaces, apart from providing Coke Oven gas which is used as fuel for other processes, and also yields a host of Coal By-products. Coke Oven Battery-4 was stopped on 29 October 2011 and cooled down for cold repair.

The job of cold repair was awarded to MECON ltd in April, 2012. After selective dismantling of refractory and mechanical parts, refractory lining work was started.
