In order to break the chain of deadly Covid-19 virus, the Jharkhand State Bar Council has resolved to restrain all the Advocates across the states and their staff, from undertaking any Court work, whether physical or online till May 2. The Jharkhand State Bar Council on Sunday held a review meeting where it was decided to suspend all court work till May 2.

Jharkhand State Bar Council president Rajendra Krishna said that the rule will be applicable to all lawyers of the state. The district bar associations will be informed about the decisions. In the review meeting of the council, 17 members gave their views, out of which 13 members supported the decision. Earlier, on April 18, the Jharkhand State Bar Council had taken a decision to postpone the work for seven days. The decision was taken due to corona infection. The Court as per its earlier decision was to resume operation from April 26, but in the past few weeks there has been a surge in corona cases.

However, despite Court restraining advocates from undertaking Court work, some lawyers continued the work.  Later, the court issued a notice that if lawyers continue to file petition or carry out other court work, action will be taken against such lawyers.

The State Bar Council stated that during this work offline as well as online work will be suspended and if any lawyer is found indulging in breaking the rules, then action will be taken against such lawyers. The Council has taken note that a huge section of the legal fraternity has fallen prone to the virus and in order to control its spread, strict measures.

In the past few weeks several lawyers including prominent lawyers have lost their lives battling corona infection. Moreover, the virus has also spread to court staff and judicial officers.

Meanwhile, the lawyers have welcomed the Jharkhand State Bar Council decision to restrain lawyers from all court work.  A lawyer from Civil Court requesting anonymity said, “The State Bar Council decision to restrain lawyers from all court work is a welcome step as the Court is a place where every day hundreds of people from different parts of the state visit and there are very chances of spread of infection.”
