Bandhu writes to CM for compensation to farmers

Mandar MLA Bandhu Tirkey has written to Chief Minister, Hemant Soren on Monday seeking compensation for farmers due to recent shower of rains and hail that destroyed a large amount of their crops.

Tirkey requested to the Chief Minister through the letter that ongoing lockdown and recent showers of rain and hail destroyed heavily the crops of vegetable growers in Mandar area so that Chief Minister by constituting a committee of officials of Agriculture Department provide proper compensation to the farmers so that they can start their farming activity in coming season.

Meanwhile, Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) has appealed to the farmers to take advantage of the good amount of pre-monsoon rains in entire Jharkhand to reduce the cost of agricultural production, increase production and productivity and improve the quality of the product in the forthcoming Kharif season.

Director of Research, BAU, DN Singh  advised that farmers should make 2-3 deep plowing at the side line of every field so that the water of the field remains in the field. "The weed, which is a major problem in Kharif, will be controlled to a great extent with this technique. The weed will come up and burn in 40-45 degree temperature by plowing. This will control the weed and it will also control cost of herbicides. The cost will be reduced considerably. Along with deep plowing, the viruses of insects and diseases will come up on the surface of the soil and will be destroyed in the high temperature. As a result, the danger of these insects in Kharif crops will be greatly reduced," he added.

Singh said that the vegetable crops could not tolerate water logging, so farmers who have cultivated crops like ladyfinger, brinjal, tomato, cucumber, cucumber, watermelon etc. should make arrangements to drain rain water by making good drainage system. "In mango-litchi trees, spray urea, DAP, potash and lime in a pestle near the root. This will make the fruits fall less, their size will be better and the quality will be better. There is no need for separate irrigation. They remove the weeds from the standing crop and grind urea," he added.

The Director said that Rabi crops like wheat, barley, gram, lentils, peas, mustard and others which are cut and kept in the barn, should be kept in their house. "Whenever there is good sunlight, dry it continuously for three days. There will be a possibility of various diseases and insects due to excess moisture in the grains. There is no harm by storing at 10-12 per cent in wheat and barley and 5-6 per cent in pulses and oilseeds," he added.
