Aspirants seek change in subject combination, Dept adamant

The high school teacher’s recruitment drive for appointing 17,572 high school teachers in Jharkhand may face a deadlock as several aspirants are against the combination of subjects made by the Department of School Education and literacy recently. The subject combinations issue is lingering since long and yet to be resolved.

Aspirants are of the opinion that, intentionally subject combinations have been kept this year to keep several students aloof from taking the examination. “The Department must immediately take off the subjects combination as due to this several aspirants will now not be allowed to sit for the examination. In all the five State-owned universities, students are given the freedom to choose the subject combinations, then why this rule is applied here,” said, high school teacher sangh, leader, Manoj Yadav.

Yadav further added that in the other two examinations conducted to appoint high school teachers in 2008 and 2015, there was no such parameter or barrier of subject combinations. Notably, in 2008 the high school recruitment test was conducted by Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and in 2015, Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) took the examination.

However, Department of School Education and literacy, Secretary, Aradhana Patnaik has clearly stated that the department is not going to change the subject combinations as all subject combinations have been made as per the statutes of the universities, seeking advice from the experts including the norms of teachers recruitment exam conducted in 2008 and 2015.

“The subject combinations have been kept as per the subject combinations and syllabus of all the State owned universities. At every college, the subject combinations are done in a similar way as we have made the combination for high school teacher recruitment,” said Patnaik.

The aspirants are protesting against the subjects combination that includes mathematics with physics, chemistry with biology and history/civics with political science. Moreover, due to the subject combination several aspirants were not even allowed to fill the application forms this year as a result approximately 50,000 aspirants of 18 different subjects are entangled in this web, claimed another aspirant requesting anonymity.

“Whatever mandatory changes were supposed to be made was done earlier, now no more further changes will be entertained. The department has kept the subject combinations as per the university rules only. Our requirement differs from the college level programme. At college level, there may be the requirement for the specialized subjects but here at high school level the need is different,” added Patnaik.
