The campaign against liquor consumption which was launched by rural women at Tiligarh village of Kairo block has now become a mass movement in the district, now reaching the urban areas also.

Hundreds of women wielding lathis in their hands on Friday started a procession from Maina Bagicha here and finally reached the weekly Friday market in the agricultural market premises. They had gathered at Akhra Kumbha wielding traditional arms before reaching the Friday market.

The women seized and threw away the liquor and the vessels they could lay their hands on in the market surroundings. Seeing the armed women, numbering a thousand, the vendors of illicit liquor ran away.

The drive against consumption of liquor is now active in over 100 villages of the district. Groups of women activists have been fanning out in the villages to create awareness among the people against liquor consumption.
