In a daring robbery in the wee hours of Wednesday, a gang of armed robbers struck at the house and decamped with cash and gold ornaments at Dhirajganj under Adityapur police station. They opened a steel almirah and took Rs 20,000 cash and gold jewellery worth over Rs 10 lakh.

The robbers who were about a dozen in number barged into the house and tied the house owner, Abhay Kumar Singh and his wife to a pillar at the victims' residential premises. They gagged the victims' mouths with clothes and pasted tapes, after which they pointed a pistol and asked for the keys of the almirah containing cash and jewellery. The victims handed over the keys without offering any resistance. The robbers walked some distance before disappearing in a vehicle already parked there.

Singh, who is an employee of Tata Growth Shop, Gamharia, somehow managed to untie himself and his wife and rushed to the Adityapur police station.

The officer-in-charge of Adityapur police station KN Mishra rushed the place of occurrence. The police official collected vital clues and claimed the case would be cracked shortly. Sniffer dogs were also pressed into service."The sniffer dog had ran toward a slum situated near the place of occurrence and the Adityapur police and entered into the bustee, but failed to nab any one from the slum," said Mishra.

The police have registered a case under section of robbery against unknown criminals on the basis of an FIR lodged by the victim, Abhay Kumar Singh. It has often been observed that burglars keep a watch to fix their 'target' in a housing colony or society before committing crimes. People whose movements were found to be suspicious should be placed under watch.

Housing societies, too, have been suggested to keep a sort of 'neighbourhood watch', he added. Among other measures, said linda, records of robbers and burglars were being studied and a list of habitual offenders being narrowed down. In the past one week, at least seven cases of burglary have been reported in the city and the suburbs. Most of the incidents happened in posh areas.
