Apollo doctor may be removed from hospital

Abdur Razzaque Ansari Memorial Weavers’ Hospital of Apollo group is all set to remove Dr Ejaz Hasmi. Hasmi was picked up from the Hospital on Thursday night by the National Investigation Agency for interrogation, allegedly for his connections with the Indian Mujahideen (IM) suspects arrested from Ranchi and Daltonganj in Patna serial blast case on Wednesday.

The hospital administration has issued a show cause notice to the doctor in this regard.

“A show cause notice has been issued to Dr Hashmi asking him to reply till Monday and clear his stand on the issue. Till then he will not be allowed to join the duty at the hospital,” said Medical Superintendent PD Sinha at the Apollo Hospital.

The NIA, on the tip-off of the four arrested IM Suspects - Taufique Ansari, Numan Ansari, Haider Ali and Mujbillah — during a raid on Idris Medical Hostel, had picked up two doctors — Ejaz Hashmi and Shoaib Akhtar — in connection with the Patna serial blasts on October 27 last year. Both of them, however, were released after several hours of interrogation by the NIA sleuths.

But sources in the Apollo Hospital revealed that there are fair possibilities that Dr Hashmi will be removed for his said connections with the IM suspects. “Since, Apollo is a hospital of great fame and repute, it will be in the interest of the hospital that nobody, having any connection with such people, should be allowed to stay here,” said another doctor requesting anonymity.

Since, several VVIPs come here for treatment, such a move is also justified from security point of view, he added.

Although Hashmi has been released by the NIA, it will be proper on the part of the Hospital Management to take disciplinary action against him seeing the ‘gravity of the situation.’ The NIA during the raid had also recovered some explosives from the hostel room which could readily be converted into high intensity bombs within a few minutes after being assembled. The list of recovered item also included a laptop and jehadi literature along with explosives like boosters, wires, detonators and IEDs.

Hashmi was working as a duty doctor at the Apollo Hospital and was staying at Idris Medical Hostel who was also doing Internship at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) after obtaining MBBS degree from here.
