After wrecking havoc for hours on Saturday thunderstorms are likely to hit the city once again in next 24 hours, predicts the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). According to IMD, moderate thundersquall, a localized storm and rain with thundering, will occur at certain places in Jharkhand. The system that was built at a high altitude due to convection is too wide in area hence it will take time move away from parts of northeast India that also includes Jharkhand, said the IMD Patna, the main centre for weather forecast in the region.
“The speed is high but the system (that has built) is too wide in area so it is taking time to pass the geography. Hence there is a probability of thunderstorms in next 24 hours,” said Director of IMD Patna, RK Giri. Meanwhile electricity supply was affected in some areas of the capital due to large scale devastation caused by gusty winds. After clearing fallen trees that damaged overhead conductors officials of the Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) had deal with more than two dozen broken electricity poles in the city and in adjoining areas. The department received complains of five broken electricity poles near Nepal House which led to disruptions in electricity supply in Doranda, five uprooted poles were also reported from Pithoria besides around 13 to 14 such incidents from Sikidiri.
“Supply in Doranda was restored on Sunday morning. We will restore supply in remaining areas in one and half hour,” said Superintending Engineer Anil Kumar.
Besides causing loss to human lives, hailstorm of Saturday damaged crops in rural areas surrounding Ranchi.
