Another case of love, sex, 'dhokha' surfaces

Even as the case of archer Tara Shahdeo is very much alive in the memory of people, another case of love and deceit apparently in the name of religion surfaced on Thursday with accusations of ‘unnatural sex’ flying thick and fast against the accused.

A 26-year-old girl, Jaya Bhandari on Thursday approached the women police station with a complaint against her husband, Waquar Danesh Anwar, who is said to belong to minority community.

In the three-page complaint, Bhandari accused Anwar of luring her into marriage and then reneging on promises of not forcing to convert. The girl alleged that she was forced to solemnise marriage through ‘nikah’ on December 31, 2013-- within two months of marrying in a Hindu temple in Ratu. The girl informed the police that they had married in the temple on October 16, 2013. The ordeal, says the girl in the complaint letter, took ugly turn with each passing day leading to conversion, sexual abuse and physical assault. The girl claims to know the community of her husband prior to tying knot and also that the accused had assured of not forcing to accept different religion.

“He had agreed to not forcing conversion initially, but soon forced to perform nikah. I was asked to cook beef and beaten black and blue for refusing to follow the instruction. My mother-in-law used to sedate me and often, I was given medicines that knocked me unconscious on quite a few occasions,” alleged the 26-year-old girl.

A case of violence and forceful conversion has been registered against the accused, who is a resident of Kantatoli. Police is treading cautiously on the matter amid apparently another case of ‘love Jihad’. Bhandari also displayed her injury to the police. “We have accepted the claim and a case has been registered against the accused.

This is a matter of investigation so, we can’t comment about sections that will be invoked. We have sent the girl to Sadar Hospital for medical examination,” said in-charge of women police station, Helen Soy.

Bhandari, a Hotel Management professional came in the contact of the accused while serving as an intern in a five-star hotel in the capital and the friendship grew stronger culminating into marriage. Bhandari was separated from her previous husband and had a daughter from the first marriage too. The accused although initially accepted the girl with the seven-year-old daughter, however, later took a U-turn, said Bhandari.

“He became friendly with my daughter and used her as a bait to win my confidence. But later, he started torturing me and refused to accept my daughter. I had to send my daughter to hostel, but that didn’t help and the torture continued until my colleagues at the hotel I work saw it,” maintained Bhandari. The girl alleged money was the motive for the inhuman behaviour of her husband and expressed threat to her and her daughter’s life.
