All schools closed: Heavy rain likely in Jamshedpur

The East Singhbhum district administration has issued notice to all  private and Government schools to remain shut tomorrow ( Monday) due to apprehensions of heavy rain in Jharkhand following the cyclone Hudhud lashing Andhra coast on Sunday.

According to information, all the private English medium schoolchildren who had their second terminal examination paper tomorrow will have their exam rescheduled.

The school authorities said that they have decied to close the campuses as per the orders. But they are unable to communicate the information to the students and parents as the decision came late on Saturday after the school hours were over. “We have asked the school staff to reach the school in the morning and convey the message to the students,” said a principal.

Ashu Tiwary, principal, Motilal Nehru Public School said that the school had second terminal examination like most of the schools. We decided to close based on information on television and newspapers though we did not receive anything from the district administration before we could decide anything. The exam which was scheduled tomorrow will take place on Oct 17, Saturday,"

The DBMS English School has also decided to reschedule its examination at a later date. The examination on Tuesday will be as per schedule. All the schools under the Kerala Public School Trust and Kerala Samajam Model School will remain closed tomorrow. The Hill Top School decided to remain closed on Monday.

Meanwhile, the district administration is geared up to face the situation. It may be recalled that the torrential rain coupled with opening of gates of two dams in Odisha and heavy rains and floods in Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha flooded Jamshedpur in June 2008 and brought life to a standstill.

However, this time administration is planning to take preventive measures pre-hand so that the horrors of the flood are not repeated. The administration is working on plans to ensure safety and better flood management system during the monsoon season.

“We have also streamlined the functioning of the Disaster Management Cell. Though the downpour has stopped, giving a sigh of relief to the people but the threat of flood still looms large in Chandil, Ichagarh and low-lying areas of adjoining localities, as the water level reaches the danger level everytime,” said an official.
