All-party meeting today as Opposition gets ammo ready

Preparation for a week-long Assembly session will be commencing with an all-party meeting scheduled to take place on Wednesday. The meeting is slated to comprise leader of the House and Chief Minister Raghubar Das along with heads of the Opposition parties led by JMM’s Hemant Soren.

Mostly a customary exercise, the meeting is likely to see flare going up from the parties in Opposition. The JMM has called a separate meeting of its legislators while the Congress legislative body would meet on Thursday, a day ahead of the Friday start.

“We have lots of issues in hand like never before. The Government has failed on every count. law and order in the capital along with highhandedness by police would be areas where the Government would find it difficult to answer. There are lots of resentments among the people against the recent police brutalities resulting into custodial killing, abetment of suicide and torturing minors. Our party would ask for a satisfactory reply on all these issues,” said Pradesh Congress Committee president Sukhdeo Bhagat.

Recent incident of death of a tribal boy in police custody at Bundu and suspicious death of police inspector Umesh Kachchap along with alleged third degree torture by Manika police on an underage girl have been in news for wrong reasons. On the contrary, police ‘inaction’ has come into fore against repeated incidents of loot and murder in Ranchi which would be definitely pounced upon by the Opposition.

“The Session is going to be stormy for sure. The Government has no moral authority to conduct. All have seen brazenness of the Government to misuse its power to win second seat for the Rajya Sabha; just to appease their bosses in Delhi. This is not a small issue and now with the evidence coming out in open, we would ask for a high-level fair probe possibly by the CBI from the Government. They would have to make an announcement in the House about this,” said JVM legislative body leader Pradeep Yadav referring to the CD claiming to have contained the ‘sting operation’ ahead of the biennial election taken place in June.

JMM, the main Opposition party, whose official candidate failed to enter into the Upper House, echoed similar sentiments. “We have been claiming about foul play since the result came. Now, when we have clear evidence in this regard, the party would expose the Government inside the House. This apart, there is autocratic approach of the Government on domicile policy which is going to be highlighted,” said JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya.

The Government, on the other, is seeking restrain from the Opposition for the sake of larger interest of the State. “They are welcomed to raise issues of people importance so that solutions can be found out collectively. Just obstructing the proceeding is not going to help,” said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Saryu Roy.

The Government is also looking up to some legislative business to transact. A Bill named as ‘Jharkhand Building Control Act’ is expected to be brought for discussion along with the first supplementary budget for the financial year 2016-17.
