Alarming trend prods Cong cell into action

The unabated crime graph against women, particularly against minors, has forced the women’s wing of the Congress to act. The women’s cell of the party is considering forming groups, preparing guidelines and helping like NGOs, all the while making people aware and reminding them of their social obligations.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the party’s lone woman legislator, Geetashree Oraon, stressed on responsibility lies with citizens in preventing the crime from taking place. “Assaults against women, especially on small girls, force us to think about the kind of society we live in. Cases are growing continuously. I think only stricter laws would not do but we have to change our mentality as well. We appeal to people to understand their responsibilities, become more social and form groups to keep a close eye on children,” said Geetashree.

The wing also came out with a list of 18 such incidents taken place in last four months in various parts of the State and admitted that things have not improved much during the President’s Rule.

The MlA said that the woman wing of the Congress would visit at village levels to form such social groups and also prepare guidelines that can be shared with residents to help them prevent such incidents from taking place.

Though, at the same time she tried to defend the Centre’s rule saying that it has no magic wand in its hand and wrongs committed in last 12 years could not be corrected in short span of time.

When asked about conduct of political leaders, cutting across party lines, towards women, she admitted that there have been instances and reports of their involvement in crime against women have come. “This is the most unfortunate as the leaders are role models for the society. It is the responsibility of the parties to give guidelines to their leaders about their social conduct,” said Geetashree.

President of the wing Abha Sinha said that delegations go to meet the affected families and help them in pursuing cases as and when any report about heinous comes to light.
