Admission season breeds education mafia in Ranchi

As the admission season at its peak, education fraudsters are trying their best to lure school pass outs with offers that appear too hard to resist. For these frauds, taking a handsome amount unofficially like every year is the simple way to book a seat in a course and college preferred by a student.

One such student residing near Station Road, Ranchi who completed his studies from Delhi Public School (DPS) Ranchi and was searching for local engineering colleges according to his marks scored in JEE (Main) was caught by a fraud/ agent about10 days back. Another student of a DAV School from Dhanbad was easily convinced by the same genre of professionals. Similar was the situation of a girl making desperate efforts to grab admission in an honours subject at Ranchi Women’s College. Surprisingly, even the law aspirants are now targeted besides engineering, medical and vocational under-graduate course lovers.

“We were mulling to locate engineering colleges in and around Jharkhand for our son. Suddenly, a team of two young boys visited our home and gave a verbal assurance to guarantee a seat in BIT Mesra. After a thorough discussion, they agreed to avail a seat in the civil engineering branch of this top engineering institution at Rs5 lakh. But, when they told us to give an advance of Rs1 lakh prior admission we denied,” Abha Srivastava, mother of the DPS student said on Thursday.

A student from Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali (JVM) Arts stream passed the Common law Admission Test (ClAT) 2014 received calls of two such fake-businessmen from Maharashtra. “Two agents called me and were asking Rs7 and 15 lakh for admission in Symbiosis law School and Bharatiya Vidyapeeth through some management quota. I responded with a no since money cannot measure my eligibility. It was a good decision. Thankfully, I got admission at NUSRl on the basis of my ClAT score,” the JVM student said.

However, there are students and guardians whose parents accept this unauthorised admission mode by paying thousands or sometime lakhs. “Parents of a DAV student with 90 per cent marks wanted to admit their child in any of the city colleges. We suggested them to try in St Xavier’s College. Unfortunately, the last date of filing application forms here for various honours were over. They got their child admitted in Economics Honours with the help of some agents at Rs50 lakh,” said a Kadru resident who happens to be the students’ neighbour.
