Addl forces to maintain vigil during Holi

The administration has beefed up security in the Capital City in a bid to avoid any untoward incident during the festival of colours. Additional forces from neighbouring districts have been brought to the State capital for patrolling the city roads and maintaining a vigil on sensitive points, Superintendent of Police (City), Sujata Veenapani said on Tuesday.

“We have brought reinforcements from other districts to ensure a strict vigil on the roads. All the sensitive points will also be under our watch during the next two days,” she said.

While Holi brings joy and enthusiasm among youths, it also causes an increase in offenses such as drunken driving.

Ranchi Police have equipped their constables with breath analyzers to keep incidents of drunken driving at bay.

“Our personnel have been provided breath analyzers. All the suspected vehicles will be checked and immediate actions will be taken against any driver found in inebriated condition,” said Veenapani.

Besides, woman constables will be deployed in different corners of the state to ensure safety of women while they indulge in the festivities. Woman constables will particularly patrol areas in the vicinity of girls’ hostels and lodges in a bid to keep Romeos away, police said.

Every year, several incidents of eve teasing are reported during Holi and the police are maintaining a strict vigil this time to ensure a safe Holi for women in Ranchi.

Police personnel involved in preparing the blueprint for the security arrangements, said that shops selling hemp (Bhang) will be under strict surveillance during the two days of the festival.

Many incidents of shopkeepers selling spurious hemp during Holi have been reported in the past years. The consumption of such hemp also caused medical emergencies in the past. The police will also keep an eye on the sale of liquor by private parties on the day of the festival.

Double murder accused surrenders

Double murder case accused Laukesh Choudhary’s bodyguard, Dharmendra Tiwari, on Tuesday surrendered to the police in Ranchi. Tiwari was one of the accused in the murder of brothers Hemant Agarwal and Mahendra Agarwal on March 6.

The duo was shot dead in the office of a private news channel owned by Choudhary. While Choudhary is still absconding, investigating teams arrested another accused in the case, Sunil Kumar from Bokaro on Saturday. Tiwari will soon be taken on remand and interrogated, police said.
