The bandh called by ABVP evoked a massive response from the people of all walks of life at Daltonganj on Thursday. The ABVP had called the bandh to protest against the lathi charge on the activists on August 6 on the premise of the Nilamber Pitamber University.
Sources said, the ABVP activists maintained their restraint and in a disciplined manner imposed the bandh which went off unresisted. The officer in charge of the Daltonganj police station Manoj Thakur said the ABVP activists acted with discipline. The police officer said the situation in the town is normal as there is no untoward incident. This police officer denied any detention on Thursday.
The ABVP however raised a point that why water as a weapon was not used for dispersal and the cops picked up lathis to beat the agitators on August 6. The ABVP has sought an answer to it as of yet.The security forces on the other hand maintained that some among the mob had a plan to humiliate the VC and the registrar by throwing black colour on their faces and for which the strategy was to unhinge the main grill door of the university so that these elements could have reached the official chambers of the VC and the registrar.
Mild force was used for dispersal, added the security forces. On the other hand the ABVP activists reiterated that all they wanted was to have an interfacing with the officials of the university to press for their 11 point charter of demands and denied any knowledge of such a thing as claimed by the police. The university sources said, the officials were prepared to read out or hand out the copy of white paper to the ABVP, prepared point wise on each of the 11 demands of the ABVP but for the chaos that set off this white paper could neither be read out to the ABVP nor could it be handed down to their any senior leader.
University sources said the magistrate on duty on August 6 at no point of time asked any senior officer of the university to make his presence before the ABVP and the magistrate and police officials then did their job quite independently on their own for the upkeep of the law and order so to say that none of the university officials reached the ABVP on August 6 is not tenable and any truthful. The police have drawn an FIR against 8 persons for the unruly scenes said the officer in charge of the town police station Thakur.
