Aadhaar-linked DBT enrollment goes slow at colleges

The roll out of Aadhaar-linked Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) wherein the reserved quota college and university students were supposed to get stipends from their bank accounts directly by connecting the Aadhaar number with their accounts respectively is being carried out at a slow and steady pace in the city colleges.

The situation remains the same in Ranchi University (RU). As per the higher education officials, State Welfare department is supposed to manage the Aadhaar details and connect them with the accounts. Throwing light over the matter, SC Gupta, dean of RU Student’s Welfare said, “We are in process of collecting the Aadhaar card copies of the 23 post graduate Part one and Part two reserved quota students. As of now we have not thought of any deadline for this matter. Once the collection is done, we will submit the details to the State Welfare Department.”

St Xavier’s College is also not yet done with the enrollment process for direct benefit transfer. “Not all including our teacher’s have received their Aadhaar cards. In such situation it has become difficult for our authorities to complete the task of Aadhaar card connection with the bank accounts for generating the stipends of the reserved class candidates,” conceded a St Xavier’s College faculty. Direct Cash transfer scheme aims to reduce leakages, cut down corruption, eliminate middlemen, target beneficiaries, better and speed up transfer of benefits to eligible individuals.

Doranda College Principal Sitaram Sahu said, “We have assigned the task of connecting the Aadhaar connected DBT to some teaching faculties and hope to start the work within 10 to 15 days.” Ranchi College Principal UC Mehta on the other side seemed unaware about this latest government scheme. “No, we have not started yet. The provision of Below Poverty line is the only special scheme meant for our student’s admission,” said Mehta.

Surprisingly, Principal of Nirmala College Sister Prishila was unable to speak a word about this issue. She said, “I will certainly not be able to say anything over this stipend benefit as neither the state government nor the RU has sent us any notification,” said Sister Prishila. Gossner College Principal Dr Siddharth Ekka claimed that most of their reserved quota students have already submitted their Aadhaar numbers and they will soon finish this matching government scheme.
