About 5 quintals of fish were discovered dead this Friday morning by fishermen at Rampur pond under Harihurganj Police Station. S K Singh, SDPO, Chhaterpur, alerted Harihurganj Police Station and asked cops to ensure that dead fish is not put on sale nor it is ice packed and then pushed in markets like that of Japla Mohammadganj, Daltonganj etc in the name of fish from Andhra Pradesh.

The SDPO further said the disposal of fish would be done by the fishermen who have been asked to bury them. There would be no burning of fish in this holy season said fishermen of Harihurganj, said sources.

About the cause of death of fishes there is no clue, said sources. The Rampur pond might have been poisoned or another theory is that rain waters caused this tragedy as rain waters coming here in this pond through fields bring with it lots of insecticide and pesticide which might have proved fatal for the fish.

laxman Chowdhury Palamu district president of National Association Of Fishermen said lack of proper upkeep and maintenance of pond also causes such fatality among fish. He said fishermen ought to have used potassium and lime here in this pond earlier to save it from getting contaminated by rain water coming into it through fields and barns. SDPO, S K Singh, said sample of water of this pond would be collected and sent for test in district fishery office in Daltonganj to ascertain if pond water was poisoned or some natural contamination caused this death of fish here at Rampur.
