5-day work week move evokes mixed response at Secretariat

The State Government’s decision to reduce working days from six to five and increase the working hours by an hour from January 1, 2014 at State Secretariat seem to have evoked mixed response among the Secretariat employees.

Some employees seek this decision to be efficient in the direction of increasing their work efficiency while others feel that rather than bringing positive changes it will induce a wave of lethargic current within them.

Supervisor at Department of Industries Umesh Chandra Verma feels that five day work culture will throw a negative impression on the Secretariat employees. He said, “The employees will seek undue advantage from this work culture. If one peeps into working pattern of the employees in the present scenario will find that from Friday onwards employees acquire the mood of holiday if five day work culture comes then from Wednesday itself the employees will acquire a lazy attitude.”

Echoing him, another employee said, “It is not going to bring much change in our work pattern nor it is going to prove as a turning point in the direction of increasing employees work efficiency. The only benefit what I seek from this is that will able to devote more time to the family.”

Meanwhile, some female employees feel that if five day work culture gets implemented properly then it is going to prove beneficial for the employees to a great extend especially for women employees. “It becomes very difficult for the female employees to manage office and home simultaneously. If five day work culture comes into frame then it will help women like us to manage office and home properly,” added Sushila Devi.

Another female employee said that in five day work culture our work pressure will remain the same but the advantage what we will get is that apart from professional life will able to get a better personnel life too.” However, for Secretariat peon the scenario will make no difference as according to them their work pressure will be the same.

A peon Ramnath said, “Five day work culture is not going to bring much change in my life as I am satisfied with the present scenario. I worship my work so feel that the more I work the more comes closer to my goal.” According to current work pattern an employee is working for 1869 hours in a year if five day work culture comes into effect then the employees will work for 1720 hours getting a relaxation of 149 hour more from the present scenario.
