Soon the streets of Capital City will be bedecked with energy efficient lED lightings. Energy Efficiency Services limited (EESl), a government of India undertaking, has been assigned the task of installing 32,000 lED lamps to light up various streets by November this year.

With an objective to save 42 lakh kWh annually through the Street light National Programme (SlNP), the company officially launched the plan in State Capital on Tuesday. Notably, the Capital City is the biggest Urban local Body (UlB) covering 55 wards at present. The programme that has been undertaken by EESl in two phases will cover all the UlBs by March 2018.

Ranchi and other UlBs will be covered up under SlNP programme, launched by PM Narendra Modi in January 2015 with a target of retrofitting 1.34 crore conventional street lights with Energy Efficient lED lighting by March 2019.

So far, the company has been successful in installing around 10 thousand lED lights at different avenues in Ranchi. According to the instructions from Chief Minister Office (CMO), it is mandatory for the company to cover all the approach routes in each UlB primarily.

Municipal Commissioner, Shantanu Kumar Agrahari along with officials of the company during a press meet on Tuesday said, “With this plan besides the major approach roads, 85 percent interior areas of Ranchi will also get covered under the SlNP guaranteeing three months’ replacement service, in case of any technical glitch.”

In the first phase, EESl had covered 11 UlBs on pilot basis while in the second phase 29 UlBs will be taken up. Additional GM, EESl, Prabhat Kumar said that for initiating the work of covering 29 UlBs, the company has already started the survey.

Kumar, on the occasion, also said that this venture will help in reduction of 3,519 tons of carbon dioxide emission per year. The company, by far has installed 30 thousand lED street lights successfully in Dhanbad, Hazaribagh, Deoghar, Basukinath, Jamshedpur, Adityapur, Jugsalai, Medininagar, Sahebganj, Mango and Dumka.

In the second phase, EESl will replace 90 thousand normal street lights with lED energy efficient street lights covering all the remaining 29 UlBs. After successful implementation of the project in Jharkhand, the State will conserve 1.19 crore kWh every year resulting in reduction of 9,897 tons of carbon-dioxide per year.

Also, the procurement price of these smart lED street lights has been reduced from Rs  135/watt to Rs . 80/watt due to mass procurement of the lights. In an attempt to put a check on forgery, EESl has planned to embed chips inside every lED light, so that the consumers can easily distinguish between the original lED lights and the Chinese lED lights that less durable.
