Rotary India District 3250 (Bihar and Jharkhand) is organising a 12-day free medical camp in Uganda, Africa. Three doctors from Ranchi will be a part of this camp which will be held from June 15 to June 27 in the city of Kampala, Uganda. The project is being organised jointly with Rotary District 9211 of Uganda.

A total of 17 doctors from across India will be travelling to Africa to train the doctors there and also conduct about 500 surgeries during the course of the camp. The cost of the entire project is estimated to be approximately Rs  56 Lakh which is being sponsored by the Rotary Foundation.

“Rotary India has been organising medical camps like these for the past 20 years across Africa. Due to acute poverty and lack of trained doctors, medical treatment is very expensive there. In these camps, we not only conduct surgeries but also give the doctors hands-on training to carry out the operations economically, efficiently and safely in the future,” said Yogesh Gambhir project chairman and CEO Raj Hospital Ranchi.

Apart from the common appendix, gallbladder and uterus surgeries, the doctors will also conduct plastic surgery, burn cases, urological surgery, tumor, laparoscopy, dental treatments and eye surgeries. All the surgeries will be conducted free of cost. The medical equipments, disposables required for the treatments and medicines are also being taken from India.

“We have collaborated with four hospitals in Uganda. Our previous camp there was in August 2018 where we had a lot of ENT and Orthopedic cases. Owning to the success of that camp, this one is being organised. We also get a lot of cases related to root canal treatment,” Gambhir further added.

Laparoscopic and Gastrointestinal Endo surgeon from Ranchi, Dr Satish Midha said, “Due to lack of specialized facilities there Rotary is organizing this camp in Africa. This is basically a surgical camp and we will try to treat as many patients as possible in the time span.”

“I am currently employed with Raj Hospital and this is the first time I am going for a camp like this. We are going for a very noble cause and I feel very privileged to be a part of this,” said Dr Rahul Rishi, a dentist from Ranchi.

Apart from the three doctors from Ranchi, the others are from Jamshedpur, Giridih, Patna, Muzaffarpur, Jalandhar, Shimla and Varanasi.
