Thunderstorm, downpour leave trail of destruction

Acruel thunderstorm acompanied by sudden downpour left a trail of destruction across Bokaro district on Wednesday night. Disruption of power supply, tress falling, traffic snarls, rooftops and hoardings being blown off were reported from several parts of the district. The thunderstorm also disrupted transportation and communications.

The wind blowing at a frightening speed uprooted several trees and rooftops. The showers were heavy and some low-lying areas were inundated. There was about 3 to 5 feet water at several spots on the National Highway-23 between Bokaro and Dhanbad. Water entered into the shops and houses in the low-lying areas of Chas and sector areas, created mayhem among the residents.

Power breakdown in many parts of the city angered residents. Posh colony like Co-operative colony, BIADA Colony including satellite town of Chas is reeling due to absence of the two necessities, which has forced the people to live in darkness, without drinking water.

Amidst all odds rains lashed most parts of Bokaro district gives respite from cruel summer blaze and intense heat; drenched the city, brought smiles on the face of farmers.

According to the Bokaro Steel Plant officials, simultaneous voltage fluctuation from DVC grid in the wee hours on Thursday at around 3.15 AM with tripping of line#57 and at 3.30 AM with tripping of line#53 of DVC resulted in power disruption at Mills and other upstream units affecting production. Also, this reduced the connectivity with DVC to a single line.

DVC lines were normalized at 5.50 AM after yard inspection. Subsequently, clearances to plant units were granted.

Additionally, load shedding by consumers of Eastern grid resulted in higher voltage than the desired level of 132 KV, delaying normalization of plant operations. Efforts with DVC and the astern Region load Despatch Centre (ERlDC) continued, to bring down bus voltage to desired 132 KV.

Thunderstorm along with incessant rains also caused branches of trees falling over electric cables in the township, leading to wide power disruption. Efforts on war footing are on to restore power supply in the township. Power supply to water treatment plant has been restored on priority basis to facilitate domestic water supply, said BlS PR official.
