Water enters low lying areas

Intermittent rain that has hit the city from last 24 hours has led to water clogging in the low-lying areas, adding to the woes of the people. Though the city has received less rainfall this year in compare to last year but still the areas located below the sea level are feeling the pinch.

Several residential complexes in Sonari and Kadma have been affected due to rains. Adarshnagar was worst hit due to rains last night. Several houses with daunted with water.

Residents of a multi-storied residential apartment, Madhusudhan Radha Krishna (G+4) and residents of Shivnagar locality are forced to suffer with over ankle deep drain water in their basements and on road after overnight rains on Friday.

“It only goes to show lack of preparedness of civc bodies. The stench from dirty water makes us stay in our flats but we are forced to go out in the morning as children go to school. Students have to take out their shoes and socks cross the basement and then wear it again in their pool vans,” said JK Rama Rao, a retired Government employee.

Many parts of Mango, Jugsalai are still under knee-deep water, making it difficult for people to move. Most of the roads are dotted with stalled vehicles, adding to the chaos. In some low lying areas several autos have been reported stranded in water.

However despite claims from the district administration, the situation in the city may get worse if steps are not taken to remove water clogging in several areas and to take other preventive measures.

“Though irregular rains have made life difficult for the residents but still there has not been much flooding even in the low-lying areas. We are keeping a vigil look and are prepared to face any flood like situation,” said an officer of Mango Notified Area Committee.

The residents have approached even the local legislator and State food and civil supplies minister Saryu Roy for resolving this problem.

“We have no choice left but to lodged a complaint with the East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amit Kumar and also with the local MlA. The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee which manages drains of the nearby areas has done nothing to clear the drains,” said a businessman and an owner of a flat.

Residents of Shivnagar have to cross through water logged streets as drain water flows onto the road.

Meanwhile, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee official said, “We regularly clean the drain but it gets clogged again as the drain diameter is very narrow. The drain was constructed several years back and the population has increased immensely. While  contract for increasing the width of the drain and work will commence soon,” he said.
