Trapping cameras in PTR non-functional at night

DAlTONGANJ: A number of trapping cameras in the Palamu tiger reserve have become non functional said sources. The cameras are taking pictures of wild life in day time but it is a total shut at night. The carnivores in PTR are mostly nocturnal and these trapping cameras failing at night has come as a rude shock to the PTR management.

The DFO Core P Anand has confirmed this saying ' Many trapping cameras are not responding at night'. Anand said recently eleven trapping cameras were checked out of which 7 were found non functional. Asked if these non functional ones can be repaired he said ' There is no such facility here'. Asked if the non functional trapping cameras will be consigned to as junk the DFO Core did not answer it saying Where to get help to set them right. The PTR officials have mooted a new way to go for phase wise trapping of wild life  in cameras. Sources said the phase wise methodology is to install cameras in one range for a maximum of ten days and then to shift it to other range. P Anand conceded such a  phase wise trapping is in the offing. Sources said in the first phase 20 trapping cameras will be installed in the Betla range. It will be there for 10 days. The PTR officials hope to have pictures of wild life here. There after the trapping cameras will be shifted to Chhipadohar East, Chhipadohar West and Kutku. This arrangement is to have a full coverage of the PTR. However sources said more than 65 to 70 % of the PTR is un manned because of its remoteness and lack of ground staff. Anand said ' We do not have enough hands to go every inch of the PTR '.
