20 modular toilets to be functional soon

Soon 20 pre-fabricated modular toilets decked up with all essential facilities will be made functional at different locations of the Capital in the first phase before the inspection formally begins.

Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has planned to set up 80 modular toilets in the city by February end. With just a week left for Quality Council of India (QCI) to visit the State Capital to analyze the cleanliness drive in the city on different parameters of sanitation challenges, RMC is all geared up to set new records this time.

However, hurdles like water shortage, its operation and maintenance, deputation of Marshalls to ensure cleanliness around the city are the major challenges even now to run these modular toilets and get the coveted tag of clean city where this year 500 cities are competing with each other in the race. Incomplete work, locked up toilets will be checked soon to address the public need and enhance urinal facilities in Ranchi, said a RMC staff.

“Request for a proposal (Tender) has been floated for operation and maintenance of all the modular toilets set up at a defined place within State Capital to ensure cleanliness. Soon all the procedures will be completed for this. Water will be supplied through tankers twice a day to meet the requirements. In the first phase, only 20 toilets will be made functional whereas rest 60 will be made functional in February,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner, Bidyanand Sharma Pankaj. “Pasa Resources Pvt. ltd, channel partner of TATA Steel is executing the task of decking up modular toilets at all the demarcated places in the Capital City as per the discussion. The pre-fabricated structure is easy in maintenance, durable in comparison to other materials and can be managed easily,” added, Pankaj.

RMC officials in collaboration with Pasa Resources Pvt. ltd have figured out more than 100 places along the roadside to set up modular toilets. Each toilet covers 16 sq. ft and is equipped with mirrors, washbasins, flush, buckets and mugs. The service can be availed free of cost by everyone.

The Civic Body has planned to barricade the open space near modular toilets to maintain the place and keep the open area clean.

Marshalls’ appointment is on the cards to ensure cleanliness in and around the area where these pre-fabricated modular toilets are erected. “The process for appointment of Marshalls to check city residents’ activities have been complete but all these Marshalls will just keep a tab on solid waste disposal and not on modular toilets use. RMC laborers will clean toilets at a regular gap while the responsibility is also upon the residents to keep the toilets tidy,” added Pankaj.
