'Sparkling Teeth' of RDCIS, SAIL steal the show

Published on:

In Metallographic contest at the 76th Annual Technical Meeting (ATM) at IIM, Hyderabad, RDCIS, SAIL, Ranchi bagged away the 1st prize in “Light Microscopy Category” for their work on “Coal petrography of high ash inertinite rich coals of Indian origin’’. The micrograph captioned "SPARKLING TEETH". The team comprised Bablu Ghosh, A Kumar, Dr. BK Sahu, SK Kushwaha and B Chakraborty under the guidance of N. Pradhan, CGM(CC&E) .

The image of “SPARKLING TEETH” is a micrograph of a polished coal surface observed under oil immersion at a magnification of 200x revealing a large grain of multi-celled inertinite coal maceral mixed with calcite minerals with wavy reliefs (crenulated boundary) and deposition of clay minerals. This is a durable form of fungal remains and develops through selective decomposition and oxygen supply in the uppermost peat layers. Shri Nirvik Banerjee, ED(RDCIS) has congratulated the team of young scientists.

This ATM covered a wide variety of themes spanning the entire spectrum of activities related to materials that are of current interest to researchers and professionals from academia, research and industry.
