The creator of magnificent Statue of Unity, portraying Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and other iconic figurines, the recipient of Padma Bhushan -- Ram Vanji Sutar spoke to the pioneer about his ventures, association with Jharkhand and the inspiration behind crafting the splendid statues of world’s iconic figures. Sutar has created more than 50 monumental sculptures in the last 40 years and is the man behind all mega statuette projects undertaken by the Government of Jharkhand (GoJ) in the recent years. Excerpts:
How does it feel at the age of 94 to take up such mega projects?
My inclination is always towards creating something that inspires each individual. From creating a huge structure of Mahatma Gandhi to crafting the figurine of ‘Iron Man of India’, I am blessed that I have got the opportunity to give shape to some great visionaries. When the officials of Jharkhand government approached me for two projects, I immediately gave them my consent. Nothing could be more inspiring than this for the people of Jharkhand to have a statue of the Youth Icon.
How much time did it take in designing 33 ft. statue of Vivekananda, considered to be the highest statue of Swamiji in India?
In three year, the team was able to complete this ambitious project. Interestingly, my team had already worked on the sculpture of Swami Vivekananda. This specific statue of Vivekananda is the first of its kind in India and has achieved the coveted honour of the highest statue of Vivekananda set up here in the land of forests after the 22 ft Swami’s figurine at Nagpur decked up at a park in 2016.
When will the Birsa project is expected to get completed?
The work is in progress, approximately 1 year 6 months more will be required to complete the figurine of Dharti Abba – Bhagwan Birsa Munda. Due to some technical glitches, the project could not be taken up on a stimulated time. The team had recently visited the site (Jail More Park) and has drafted the final plan. Attempt will be made to complete the project soon.
As an artist, you have given shape to several iconic figurines. Which one is your favourite?
For an artist, his each creation is special. I have worked on several projects yet for me, the Statue of Unity including the Statue of Vivekananda holds a special place in my heart. Both the statues motivate every individual to uphold the main motto i.e...Unity and integrity of this country.
