A youth reportedly committed suicide in police custody at Gariaband district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Sunil Shrivastava, who was arrested in connection with a cheating (420) case and was kept at Panduka police station. He used to work as a salesman in a firm selling tractors.
“On Monday evening Sunil was arrested by Panduka police station staff and was brought to the police station. When his family members met him on Tuesday morning he appeared normal,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Gariaband MR Ahire said.
In the morning hours the deceased went to toilet and two guards stood outside. Inside the toilet he hanged himself with the shirt he was wearing, the SP said adding that when Sunil did not come out the iron door was broke open but he was found dead.
Five persons including TI Vedvati Dario, an ASI, one head constable and two constables have been suspended in this connection, the SP said.
A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered into the case.
