Yogesh Kumar Sahu, 28, the physically challenged youth who had attempted self-immolation in front of the official residence of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh in Raipur on July 21 succumbed to his grievous burn injuries during the wee hours of Wednesday.

Sahu was first admitted at Dr B R Ambedkar Hospital and later shifted to  Kalda Burns and Plastic Surgery Centre in Raipur in a critical condition for advanced treatment after he tried to immolate himself by dousing kerosene and setting himself afire.

"Yogesh Kumar Sahu breathed his last at around 3.40 am. He had sustained around 85 per cent burns," according to Dr Sunil Kalda, who attended on him at Kalda Burns and Plastic Surgery Centre .

A resident of Birgaon near Raipur, Sahu had set himself afire outside the Chief Minister’s residence while Singh was meeting people during his Jandharshan programme.

Sahu wanted to meet the Chief Minister for seeking a job due to poor financial condition of his family. Security personnel took his application but did not allow him to meet the Chief Minister as he was reportedly late for the Jandarshan programme. Dejected, the youth then tried to commit suicide.

Chief Minister Raman Singh while expressing profound grief over the death of the youth stated :“It’s really sad and unfortunate. Youths shouldn’t get disillusioned and take such extreme step. Various schemes, training and skill development programmes of the Government are aimed at providing them employment,” Singh said.

He said that all possible assistance will be provided to the family of the deceased.
