Women, children unsafe in Chhattisgarh: Cong

Published on:

Expressing his shock and anger over the alleged gang-rape of a girl student in the district of Jashpur, the Opposition Congress on Saturday said the incident has demonstrated that women and children are not safe in the State.

Condemning the incident, Congress media cell chief Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said the incident has also exposed the Government’s double standard in dealing with the issues relating to women and children.

The Government has failed to provide a safe and secure environment to the women and children.

Every day on an average at least one woman is being raped and every second day one woman is being gang raped in the State and Government is not doing enough to prevent such incidents, he alleged.

He said the status of women and girls especially in the tribal dominated area of Bastar, Surguja have become worse. In Jashpur district alone, at least five thousands girls have gone missing.

These girls are being exploited outside of the State and the Government is not taking care of them, he said.

Seeking an answer from Chief Minister Raman Singh and Home Minister Ramsevak Paikra the Congress leader also said it appears that the Bastar and Surguja area do not figure on State’s police map.

Taking a dig at the Government over the law and order situation in the State, he said the number of Maoist affected districts were earlier claimed to be 14 when Raman Singh was in charge of Home Ministry.

Now when Paikra took over, the number of Maoist affected districts increased to 16.
