Doctors of the orthopedic department of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College Hospital, Raipur gave a new lease of life to a critically injured woman victim of accident by series of treatment over one and a half years to ensure she walks again.
As per HOD and orthopaedic surgeon Dr S. N. Phuljhale, the 27-year-old woman from Abhanpur had fell from a motorcycle leading to a critical multiple fractures in hip bone, thigh bone and leg bone. So, it was a challenge for treating the patient.
The team of doctors first rectified the thigh bone, then hip bones and in last leg bones through Ilizarov technique. Through the technique one mm bone was being lengthened in a month and after months on average 8-9 mm bone was extended. The new grown bone part was then cut and joined it to replace the bone which had been dissolved due to infection.
Sports injury expert and ortho surgeon Dr Rajendra Ahire said bones can be regenerated and through this technique the length of a broken bone can be elongated. Generally, this grown bone can then be cut and transplanted at the diseased part. The technique uses principle of tension/strain.
The patient (identity not revealed) said she has been undergoing treatment for so long and now is able to walk by herself. She had undergone free treatment in one and a half years in the hospital.
