Doctors at the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI) of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital here provided a new lease of life after operating a 26-year-old Ebstein’s anomaly affected female patient.
The doctors used bovine tissue valve and autologous blood transfusion in the case.
Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon and HoD of ACI Dr. Krishna Kant Sahu said on Monday that Raipur's Dipti Verma had bluish discoloration, shortness of breath for eight months and she fainted many times.
Three months ago, she consulted Dr Smith Shrivastava, who is HoD of Cardiology Department in Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital (BRAMH).
After echocardiography, it was found that Verma has a very rare heart disease, Ebstein’s Anomaly, and was in a very serious condition. She was referred to ACI for surgery, Dr Sahu told the media.
The relatives were told that there is less than 10 percent success ratio in the operation and there is a 100 percent chance of the patient’s death due to the disease without operation, he said.
The operation was done a few days ago, Dr Sahu said.
Verma’s own blood was collected and reinfused during the operation through autologous blood transfusion technique, he added.
It is a rare heart disease present at birth. In this condition, the tricuspid valve is in the wrong position and the valve’s flaps (leaflets) are malformed. As a result, the valve does not work properly. The life of such a patient is about 20 years, Dr Sahu said.
