Woman climbs atop tank to protest demolition

A dejected old woman on Monday climbed atop a public water supply tank and threatened to commit suicide a day after demolition squad of the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) cleared illegal constructions on Sheetala Nagar locality adjoining Avanti Vihar in the city.

The RMC demolition squad had arrived in the Sheetala Nagar locality on Sunday and had demolished the illegal constructions amid protests by the residents. Some of the residents of the locality tried to persuade the woman identified as Taramati to come down from the tank but she did not budge following which they called the police.

After a lot of persuasion by the police and the local residents the woman came down from the tank but fainted immediately. The police then called for ‘108 Sanjeevani Emergency  Express’ Ambulance which arrived shortly and rushed her to Dr Ambedkar hospital for treatment. Notably the Railway track (Raipur-Dhamtari narrow gauge) which traverses through Avanti Vihar colony has densely populated slum localities on its either side.

Since this track is to be converted into a road, a demolition squad started demolishing the slums on Sunday after a year-long notice served to the slum dwellers with the alternative resettlement arrangement for their safe dwelling made in Kachana locality of the city.
