A wild elephant was electrocuted in Daldali village of Pratappur Forest Range of Surajpur district. The body of wild elephant was found on Wednesday morning, officials informed. According to Range Officer Pratappur, SN Mishra a farmer in Daldali village had cultivated sugarcane. For protecting the crop from elephants, the farmer had placed live electric wire around the field.

“It seems that the young elephant about 10 to 12 year old came in contact with the wire and was electrocuted,” the Range Officer said. According to Forest Department officials, the killed Pachyderm was part of a 32 member wild elephant group moving in Pratappur Range. Another heard of 21 elephants has also been spotted about 15 km Daldali village in the same Forest Range.

Meanwhile, Wildlife expert Amalendu Mishra who has been closely observing the wild elephant problem in Surguja region for more than a decade said that  the Forest Department has failed in providing any effective solution to the elephant problem in the region.

“Due to lack of effective solution for wild elephants problem, the affected villagers are finding it easy to kill wild elephants for saving their lives, property and crops. This trend is expected to increase during the coming times which will make things worse,” Mishra said.
