What is Myasthenia gravis

Published on:

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disorder which causes weakness in the skeletal muscles. It occurs when communication between nerve cells and muscles becomes impaired, said Dr K.K. Sahu.

He said around 10 to 15 percent of people with MG will have a tumour in their thymus. Tumours, which are benign, are always removed because they may become cancerous.

Generally, the symptoms are trouble in talking, walking, lifting objects, difficulty in breathing, swallowing or chewing, fatigue, drooping of eyelids and others.

Dr Sahu said the disease is found among 0.3 people in 100,000.
